Safe and unjudged

Playback is improvisational theater, in which actors play the audience’s stories in real time. A vivid emotion, a weekday, a tragicomedy, a melodrama can be told – the actors will live the whole spectrum on stage and get to the heart.

Every story has an opportunity to be heard.

At the appointed time and place, we gather for a performance. The facilitator sets the theme, inviting the audience to dialogue.

Once the first story has been told, the actors and the musician transform it into an artistic stage piece, using composition, metaphors, voice, and plastics.

Next, the host asks the guests about the stories that arise, and the actors again play on the basis of what they have heard.

This goes on for some time, with an average performance lasting 1.5 hours.

In 1975, Jonathan Fox, Joe Salas, and a team in New Paltz, near New York City, created the Playback Theatre Method. Jonathan Fox at the time had a background in academic theater research at Harvard and was a playwright and actor. Joe and Jonathan were also active in Peace Corps volunteer activities in Nepal, Malaysia, etc. They became interested in tribal customs, community, and the tradition of sharing and acting out stories around an evening campfire.

Later, Jonathan became acquainted with Zerka Moreno and the Spontaneity Theater in Vienna, where they made extensive use of the psychodrama method.

In this way, playback theater combined dramatic theater, tribal traditions, and psychodrama.

Yes, you can. You can take all your family, friends, and colleagues. It’s social theater, which fascinates people of different ages and interests.

Please send your request to one of the organizers in social networks, or write to us here: info@playback.lt. Also, you can call +37061619696. We would be really glad to discuss your request.

First and foremost, playback theater is the art of dialogue; it helps to see an issue from different angles, brings the community together, and helps shape values for the future.

It is possible to work on such cases:

~ conflicts,

~ gender issues,

~ work with bullying in schools,

~ adaptation of social groups (addicts, prisoners…),

~ work with vulnerable communities (sick people, homeless people),

~ work with national and ethnic minorities.

No, it isn’t. Playback is a theater of peoples’ stories. One of the playback goals is a dialog. The dialog appears not on the rational level but through the atmosphere. You’re not obligated to tell your story, somebody else from the audience can do this. The Story — every story is important, performance cannot occur without it.

Majorly unprofessional actors are playing on the stage. However, they passed special training on playback practice and got certified in the method. We are IT specialists, medical doctors, designers, artists, volunteers, mothers, fathers, business owners, unemployed, and even aeronauts:) We are different but united by the common passion to the playback.

We organize performances to cover any corporate need: teambuilding, conflict management, and just for fun, as well as we do training on soft skills, using performative practices.

1

6

Group processes

Conferences and festivals can use the playback to get to know each other, to integrate the experience and feedback, and to share experiences with other participants.

7

Part of the business training

In the process of sharing their stories and experiences, company personnel can discover the source of a resource for themselves and subsequently establish effective communication and synchronize values.

When I was invited to the event, at first I didn't understand where I was going. Some kind of theater or no theater... When I saw it, I could not tear myself away until the end of the performance. The actors were attention-grabbing, the plot of each story was displayed, and the emotions, emotions! I'm very glad I decided to go to a theater I didn't know, I'll be back again if possible.

Very glad I was persuaded to come and see the performance. It was soulful and yet structured, as if every phrase had been verified to the millimeter, even though they were improvising! I hope playback in Lithuania will be actively developing in the near future.

It was an awesome performance! Tremendous emotional spectrum: from tears to laughter, and back. It’s a great way to get relief and reflect on what concerns you or, vice versa, inspires you. In two hours of performance I got out with a little tremor in my hands, being full of inspiration. It was similar to a therapeutic session, where actors visualize and embody your emotions. I had the opportunity to look at my problems from a different perspective. Such a marvelous concept and actors (aka performers)

Thanks to the "Вахтёры" who came to Visaginas in January. In winter there is shortage of warm contacts. In general, it's nice to meet experimental live art in my area, which is more about the person than the form.

From the moment I first encountered Playback, I was impressed to my heart. It's like jazz, not just in musical form, but a full-fledged performance. The actors also instantly acted out the stories told by the audience. And for some reason this theater is not known in Lithuania...
